Welcome to Applied Science

Are you interested in the practical aspects of science, and how it is applied to the world around us? Are you interested in a course which includes aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics?

If this sounds like you, then Applied Science is the course for you. You will develop knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the digestive system, the components of a balanced and imbalanced diet, as well as the effects that this will have on health. Not only this, but you will learn about roles that require knowledge of the human body, such as sports scientists and dieticians.

Assessment

Our Applied Science course is comprised of six assessments, three of which are internally assessed, and three of which are externally assessed.

  • Unit 1: Key Concepts in Science
This unit is an exam-based unit, lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. This unit is worth 16.6% of the course certification.
  • Unit 2: Applied Experimental Techniques
This is an internally assessed, practical assignment. This unit is worth 16.6% of the course certification.
  • Unit 3: Science in the Modern World
This unit is an exam-based unit (based on pre-release materials), lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. This unit is worth 16.6% of the course certification.
  • Unit 4: The Human Body
This unit is an exam-based unit, lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. This unit is worth 16.6% of the course certification.
  • Unit 5: Investigating Science
This unit is an internally assessed, practical assignment. This unit is worth 16.6% of the course certification.
  • Unit 6: Practical Assignment
This unit is an internally assessed, practical assignment in an optional unit (based on Biology, Chemistry or Physics). This unit is worth 16.6% of the course certification.

Career & Progression Opportunities

This qualification is supported by a range of universities and apprenticeship providers, and, when taken alongside other qualifications, it can fulfil the entry requirements for a number of science-related higher education courses, including biomedical science, forensic sciences, sports science and nursing.

Entry Requirements

If you’d like to study Applied Science, you will need at least a Grade 4 in Combined Science (or Grade 4’s in Biology, Chemistry & Physics), plus, a Grade 4 in English and a Grade 4 in Mathematics.
