Welcome to Core Maths
Core Maths is a one year course which offers a continuation of Mathematica study for students not suited to A-level Mathematics.
This course is a Level 3 qualification, and allows any student with at least a Grade 5 in Mathematics to continue studying Mathematics at post-16.
The Core Maths course is designed to be a practical course, focusing on real life mathematics, including problem solving using real life Mathematics, including problem solving using mathematical ideas that you have met during the GCSE course.
You will study aspects of financial maths, statistics, the use of technology applied to problem solving and more algebraic techniques.
This course is an ideal accompaniment to Level 3 Science courses, Business Studies and Social Sciences courses, giving you solid grounding in the techniques required for these subjects post A-level.
Assessment
Our Core Maths courses are assessed across 2 exam papers, each lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- Paper 1: Maths for Personal Finance, Analysis of Data & Estimation
This unit is an exam-based unit, lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. This is worth 50% of the course certificate. - Paper 2: Critical Analysis of Data, The Normal Distribution, Probabilities & Estimation, Correlation & Regression.

Entry Requirements
If you’d like to study Core Maths, then you will need at least a Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.
