Welcome to Business Studies (BTEC)

This course will cover the business environments, finance, marketing and recruitment content areas.

Throughout the course, you will investigate how businesses are organised, how they communicate and how the environment they operate in impacts on success.

Throughout the course, you will also examine the aims and objectives of marketing different products and services. You will make recommendations about the type of marketing campaigns that a business should undertake.

You will also gain an understanding of personal finance, and the different financial decisions that you will make throughout your own life, as well as being able to create and interpret a variety of business accounts.

Additionally, you will create a recruitment document, and take part in a role-play job interview.

Assessment

The Business Studies (BTEC) course is comprised of four assessed units, which are graded at a Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction Star (*).

  • Unit 1: Exploring Business
    This unit is an internally assessed coursework assignment.
  • Unit 2: Developing a Marketing Campaign
    This is a set-task examination, based on a case study that you will receive two weeks before the exam. This unit is a three-hour computer based examination.
  • Unit 3: Personal & Business Finance
    This unit is a written examination, lasting for 2 hours.
  • Unit 8: Recruitment & Selection
    This unit is an internally assessed coursework assignment.

Career & Progression Opportunities

Business Studies is an exciting subject, with real-life relevance that can relate to the workplace, and life within your own, independent business.

Career opportunities for Business Studies students include accountancy, banking, business management, business law, human resource management, the Civil Service, Marketing, trading, management consultancy and retail buying.

Entry Requirements

If you’d like to study Business Studies (BTEC), then you’ll need at least a Grade 5 at GCSE Business, or at least a Merit at BTEC Level 2 in Business Studies*.

This course is suitable even if you have not previously studied a Business Studies qualification.

However, if you have gained a Level 2 – Pass, then you may be admitted to the course following an interview by the Head of Faculty.
