Welcome to Art

This qualification provides a coherent introduction to the study of art and design. Students develop art and design projects and gain an understanding of the creative process. Students will study visual recording and communication, critical analysis and production skills to produce art and design outcomes.

This course has an equivalent size to one A-level. You will study four units of work, two of which are externally assessed. The coursework units are worth 42% of the course certificate, and the external units are worth 48% of the course certificate.

Assessment

Our Art & Design (Fine Art, BTEC) course is comprised of four assessments, two of which are internally assessed, and two of which are externally assessed.

• Unit 1: Visual Recording & Communication (Externally assessed)
  This unit involves the investigation, the exploration and experimentation of a wide range of visual recording materials, and methods to express and communicate their personal ideas on a given theme.
• Unit 2: Critical & Contextual Studies in Art & Design (Externally assessed)
  This unit involves the development of contextual research and critical analysis skills. Students will investigate the contextual influences on practitioners that drive and underpin their work. You will learn how to critically analyse pieces of art and design work, deconstructing images and thinking critically about what you see.
• Fine Art Materials, Techniques & Processes (Internally assessed)
• The Creative Process (Internally assessed)

Career & Progression Opportunities

Art & Design can lead to a variety of different creative job roles. This could include design within any material area. Opportunities could include animation, architecture, cartoonist, ceramic designer, fashion designer, fine artist, games designer, glassmaker, graphic designer, illustrator, interior designer, jewellery designer, landscape architect, product designer, photographer, set designer, theatre and costume designer and web design.

Entry Requirements

If you’d like to study Art & Design, you will need at least a Grade 5 in GCSE Art & Design, or, at least a Pass in Level 2 BTEC First in Art & Design.
